DISTRIBUTION

Found in the North-east Atlantic from the Barents Sea to North-west Africa through the western coasts of the British Islands. Also in the Mediterranean and Black Seas.

ECOLOGY

Demersal species found at depths between 150-1000 m. It usually inhabits muddy bottoms and its diet predominately consists of crustaceans and fish.

FISHERIES

Mainly landed by fisheries using trawls, longlines, and gillnets.

DID YOU KNOW

This species has a late maturity with males not maturing until 9 years (75 cm) and females at 11 years (88 cm).
