DISTRIBUTION

Found in the North-east Atlantic, from Northern Norway and southwards to North-west Africa. Also found along the northern coasts of the Mediterranean Sea.

ECOLOGY

Benthic species that inhabits sand, gravel and rocky bottoms at depths of 5 m to down to 100 m. Active predator which feeds on crustaceans and molluscs.

FISHERIES

Landings mostly from bottom trawl and trap fisheries.

The carapace has nine rounded lobes along its front edge and the claws feature distinctive black tips.
