DISTRIBUTION

Distributed along the North-east Atlantic, from the White Sea to North-west Africa, including the Baltic Sea. Also found in the Mediterranean and Black Seas.

ECOLOGY

Benthic species found at shallow soft bottom beds in depths of 1-100 m. Also found in brackish water, rivers and lakes. Its diet consists of fish and invertebrates.

FISHERIES

Mainly fished using beam trawls, otter trawls and passive gears such as gillnets.

DID YOU KNOW

The colour of the body, although generally brown, depends on its habitat. Threatened animals usually change to a pale colour.
