DISTRIBUTION

Found in the North-east Atlantic from the Norwegian Sea to the western coasts of Africa, including off-lying islands. Also present in the Mediterranean Sea.

ECOLOGY

Species inhabits sandy and gravel bottoms from the low tide down to 250 m deep. They are a suspension-feeding species consuming plankton and detrital material.

FISHERIES

Caught mostly by dredgers and to a lesser extent by hand by divers.

Young molluscs live attached to hard substrates but when they become adult, shells are free.
