DISTRIBUTION

Distributed in the North-east Atlantic from Iceland and the Norwegian Sea to North-west Africa. Also present in the Mediterranean Sea.

ECOLOGY

Present on muddy bottoms, where they live in shallow burrows, at depths ranging from 20 to 800 m. Its diet consists of detritus, crustaceans and polychaete.

FISHERIES

Mostly caught by bottom trawls and to lesser extend by pots and traps.

Captivity studies have shown that individuals form interconnected burrow systems with up to 13 entrances and ventilation shafts.
