DISTRIBUTION

Present in the North-east Atlantic from the Barents Sea and Iceland to the Iberian Peninsula, including the Baltic Sea. Also present in the Mediterranean.

ECOLOGY

Demersal species found in the depth of range 0 - 200 m on muddy and sandy bottoms. It is also found in estuaries. Its diet consists of molluscs and polychaetes.

FISHERIES

Caught mainly in mixed demersal fisheries using beam trawls, otter trawls and gillnets.

Although it has a characteristic smooth brown skin covered with orange or red spots, it can change the colour of its body to blend into environment.
