DISTRIBUTION
Found along the North-east Atlantic from the Norwegian Sea and Iceland down to North-west Africa. Also found in the western Mediterranean Sea.
ECOLOGY
Commonly found on rocky, sandy and muddy bottoms from 150 m down to 700 m. Omnivorous but mostly feeds on crustaceans, molluscs, worms and fish.
FISHERIES
Mostly caught using bottom trawl, handline, longline, trammel net and gill nets.

This species is a protandric hermaphrodite, which means it is first a male and between ages of 2 and 7 it becomes female.
