DISTRIBUTION

Present in the North-east Atlantic from the Barents Sea and Iceland and southwards to the Bay of Biscay. Also present in the southern Baltic Sea.

ECOLOGY

Pelagic gregarious species found in the depth range 30 - 370 m. Migrations are known to occur, particularly for spawning. Its diet is mostly fish and crustaceans.

FISHERIES

Mainly caught by pair and single trawls, gillnet, purse seine and longline fisheries.
