DISTRIBUTION
Distributed in the North-east Atlantic ranging from the Barents Seas southwards to the Western Iberian Peninsula. Also found in the Baltic Sea.
ECOLOGY
Adults spend their life at sea, returning to freshwater to spawn. Juveniles inhabit freshwater areas, before migrating out to sea. Marine individuals are found in depths between 0-210 m and feed on fish, cephalopods and crustaceans.
FISHERIES
Caught mainly using gill nets and trawl nets. Majority found on sale are from aquaculture production.
