DISTRIBUTION
Found in the North-east Atlantic from the Western Iberian Peninsula and southwards to West Africa, including off-lying islands and the Mediterranean Sea.
ECOLOGY
Benthopelagic gregarious species that inhabits sandy and rocky bottoms, most commonly between 5 to 20 m deep. Feeds on worms, molluscs, shrimps and seaweeds.
FISHERIES
Most of the landings are by trammel nets, gill nets and hand lines.
DID YOU KNOW
Adults are often present in the surf whilst younger individuals prefer brackish waters or littoral pools.
