DISTRIBUTION
Found in the North-east Atlantic, ranging from Southern Norwegian Sea to North-west Africa, including the Baltic Sea. Also found in the Mediterranean and Black Seas.
ECOLOGY
Pelagic schooling fish usually found in inshore waters of approx. 50 m below the surface but occasionally as far as 150 m. It feeds on planktonic crustaceans and diatoms.
FISHERIES
Caught mainly using mid-water small-meshed trawls but also using purse-seiners and driftnets.
DID YOU KNOW
They often make vertical migrations relative to the fluctuating light of the day. During daytime the species inhabits deeper waters, moving closer to the surface at night.
