DISTRIBUTION

Distributed along the North-east Atlantic from the North Sea southwards to West Africa. Also present in the Mediterranean Sea.

ECOLOGY

Dermersal and neritic species found to depths of 400 m on sandy and muddy bottoms. Their varied diet consists of fish, cephalopods, crustaceans and polychaetes.

FISHERIES

Caught mainly by multi-species trawling fisheries and by hand-line jigs fisheries.

Adult individuals have small chromatophores on the mantle which allows them to change colour, i.e. for camouflage.
