DISTRIBUTION
Found in the North-east Atlantic from the Bay of Biscay to West Africa, including off-lying islands. Also present in the Mediterranean and Black Seas.
ECOLOGY
Demersal species present on rocky and sandy bottoms in depths of 0-50 m. Feeds predominately on seaweeds, benthic invertebrates, crustaceans and molluscs.
FISHERIES
Most of the landings are by trammel nets, gill nets and hand lines.

Estuaries are commonly used as nursery areas and young individuals can also found in seagrass beds.
