DISTRIBUTION

Distributed in the North-east Atlantic from the Norwegian Sea and Iceland to West Africa, including off-lying islands. Present also in the Mediterranean Sea.

ECOLOGY

Present in depths ranging 40-1000 m. Inhabits irregular bottoms such as rocky reefs and caves. Its diet consists of large crustaceans, cephalopods and benthic fish.

FISHERIES

Mainly caught in fisheries using pelagic drift-nets and longlines.

Usually solitary but young individuals occasionally form small schools.
